Microsoft Outlook Outage: Thousands Affected Across the U.S., Microsoft Restores Services

People in the U.S. who use Microsoft had a lot of problems getting to Outlook, Microsoft 365, and other services on Saturday afternoon. A lot of people were upset about the loss, and reports of problems started to rise quickly after 3:30 p.m. ET.

Downdetector says that more than 37,000 reports were made about Outlook, and about 24,000 users complained about problems with Microsoft 365 services. Some users also had trouble getting into Azure and Microsoft Teams. Most of the outages happened in big places in the U.S., like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Many people who were affected went on social media site X to voice their worries, afraid that the problem would spread around the world.

Microsoft Investigates and Identifies Cause

Microsoft acknowledged the problem and began investigating the root cause. The official Microsoft 365 Status account posted on X, saying, “We’re investigating an issue in which users may be unable to access Outlook features and services.” The company also advised administrators to check additional details under the incident code MO1020913 in the admin center.

As user complaints mounted, Microsoft announced that it had identified a possible cause of the outage. “We’ve identified a potential cause of impact and have reverted the suspected code to alleviate impact. We’re monitoring telemetry to confirm recovery,” the company stated in an update.

Recovery Underway, Microsoft Monitors Services

By early Sunday morning, Microsoft reported that services were gradually being restored. “Our telemetry indicates that a majority of impacted services are recovering following our change. We’ll keep monitoring until impact has been resolved for all services,” the company said.

At 4:35 a.m. ET, Microsoft confirmed that rolling back the service update had stabilized operations. “We’ve entered a period of extended monitoring to ensure that the service remains stable and to address any outstanding impact to other Microsoft 365 services,” the Microsoft 365 Service Status page noted.

Past Outages and User Frustrations

This isn’t the first time that Microsoft systems have been down. Several Outlook users have already said they’ve been having trouble getting into their accounts in the past few weeks. In 2023 and 2024, there were also large-scale outages that took hours to fix.

The most recent outage shows how much we rely on cloud-based productivity tools like Microsoft 365. People and companies depend on these services for daily tasks, so even short interruptions can be very annoying for many.

Conclusion

Even though Microsoft has fixed the problems and promised that users will be constantly monitored, this situation shows how important it is to keep infrastructure strong to avoid these kinds of problems. Users who are affected can check the Microsoft 365 Service Status page or look at event MO1020913 to find out what’s going on.
